1880–1884 – studied art at the Moscow school of painting, sculpture and architecture where his teacher was Illarion Pryanishnikov
1899–1918 – was Professor teaching painting at the same art school
Alexei Stepanov began to show his paintings at public art exhibitions in1880.
He participated in exhibitions of the Society for Travelling Art Exhibitions in 1891, 1895, 1896, 1897, 1898, 1900 and in the Academy of Arts and abroad: Paris, 1900 and New York, 1923.
His paintings can be found in the Tretyakov Gallery, in some Russian regional and republican museums, as well as abroad: in Belorussia, USA and other countries.
