He studied at the Drawing School of the Society for the Encouragement of Artists, under Rudolf Zhukovskii and Ivan Kramskoi, then in the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts (1864-1871) in St. Petersburg.
In 1865 he became an active participant in the organization of independent creative artists "Artel Archaeology" in St. Petersburg.
In 1869 he was awarded a small gold medal and the title of the class artist.
In 1871 he was awarded a gold medal, the title of class artist 1st grade and the right for a 6-year education in Italy and France, where he completed his artistic education.
1873 - 1876 he traveled with his family to Austria, Italy, Venice and Florence.
1894 -1907 he taught at the Higher Art School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture at the Imperial Academy of Arts.
1898 – 1899 he was a rector of the Academy of Fine Arts.
1897-1899 he taught at the school-workshop of Princess Maria Tenisheva in St. Petersburg and Smolensk (1895-1899).
In 1901 he gets the state order to portray the centenary session of the State Council in the Marie Palace.
His paintings can be found at the Tretyakov Gallery, the State Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts (Moscow), The Scientific and Research Museum of the Russian Academy of Arts, the State Russian Museum (St.Petersburg), the Kiev Museum of Russian Art, the Irkutsk Art Museum, the Saratov State Art Museum, The A.N. Radishchev's State Museum, The “Penaty" Estate-Museum of Ilya Repin (Repino settlement, resort area of St. Petersburg) and in many other regional museums and private collections in Russia and abroad.
Exhibitions:
The artist exhibited his paintings at the Paris Salon (1875). He participated also in exhibitions of the Association of Traveling Art Exhibitions (1879, 1883, 1884, 1885).
Personal exhibitions:
Solo exhibitions of the artist were held in Moscow (1891-1892, 1894, 2009), St. Petersburg (1891-1892), Finland (2006).
