1901–1907 – made studies, initially, at the Stroganov School for Technical Drawing, his teachers being Sergei Ivanov, Konstantin Korovin and Dmitri Shcherbinovsky
1907–1911 – a student at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture where his teachers were Abram Arkhipov, Sergei Ivanov and Konstantin Korovin
1920–1929 – a student at VHUTEMAS.
Sergei Gerasimov was an art teacher himself:
1912–1914 – at the art school attached to Ivan Sytin’s printing shop
1918–1923 – at the state-sponsored School of Printing, the renamed Sytin’s art school
1920–1929 – at VHUTEMAS – VHUTEIN
1930–1936 – at the Moscow polygraphic institute
1936–1964 – at the Surikov Art Institute (occupying the position of its Curator in 1946–1948).

Sergei Gerasimov’s one-man shows were often held in Moscow (1934, 1936, 1939, 1944, 1945, 1956, 1960 and 1966) and Leningrad (1936, 1945 and 1967) and  also in Riga (1966), Bucharest (1959), Warsaw (1967), Prague and Bratislava.
